چکیده

The stability of chemical bonds at the molecule− metal interface is of fundamental importance for a majority of applications based on organic materials. It remains, however, extremely difficult to determine this stability using experimental and theoretical methods. A detailed analysis of the static SIMS (SSIMS) data obtained for the homologous series of thiolateand selenolate-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on the Ag(111) substrate reveals positional oscillations in the stability of consecutive chemical bonds in the vicinity of the molecule− metal interface. The observed oscillations are much more pronounced compared to recently reported analogous data for the Au(111) substrate, which confirms the universal nature of this phenomenon and its strong dependence on the type of molecule binding atom (S or Se) and the substrate (Ag or Au). Importantly, such an analysis has not been conducted to date using any other technique, and this study not only reveals the universal mechanisms of molecule−metal interface stability but also presents S-SIMS as a unique tool for such an analysis.

The interface structure of n-alkylthiolate self-assembled monolayers on coinage metal surfaces.

The current state of understanding of the structure of the metal/thiolate interface of n-alkylthiolate 'self-assembled monolayers' (SAMs) on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) is reviewed. On Cu(111) and Ag(111) there is now clear evidence that adsorbate-induced reconstruction of the outermost metal layer occurs to a less atomically-dense structure, with the S head-group atom bonded to four-fold and ...

Ion-beam-induced desorption as a method for probing the stability of the molecule-substrate interface in self-assembled monolayers.

During recent years self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been recognized as model structures for different areas in nanotechnology, ranging from nanolithography and molecular electronics to sensors and biocompatible materials. A growing range of possible new SAM applications demands better understanding of their detailed molecular structure, which is a result of balancing molecule–molecule and...

Triptycene-terminated thiolate and selenolate monolayers on Au(111)

To study the implications of highly space-demanding organic moieties on the properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), triptycyl thiolates and selenolates with and without methylene spacers on Au(111) surfaces were comprehensively studied using ultra-high vacuum infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectros...

Electrochemical stability of self-assembled monolayers on nanoporous Au.

Desorption of thiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) seriously limits the fabrication of thiol-based devices. Here we demonstrate that nanoporous Au produced by dealloying Au-Ag alloys exhibits high electrochemical stability against thiolate desorption. Nanoporous Au has many defective sites, lattice strain and residual Ag on the ligament surface. First-principles calculations indicate that ...

Relative stability of thiol and selenol based SAMs on Au(111) - exchange experiments.

Two fully analogue homologue series of thiol and selenol based aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) in the form of CH(3)-(C(6)H(4))(2)-(CH(2))(n)-S-Au(111) (BPnS/Au(111), n = 2-6) and CH(3)-(C(6)H(4))(2)-(CH(2))(n)-Se-Au(111) (BPnSe/Au(111), n = 2-6), respectively, have been used to elucidate the relative stability of the S-Au(111) and Se-Au(111) bonding by monitoring their exch...
